Text

Vector Calculus, fourth edition,  Marsden and Tromba, W. H. Freeman and Company.

Objective

In this course we will generalize the Calculus concepts taught in MCS 121 and 122 to higher dimensions.  In particular, we will discuss partial derivatives and their use in optimizing functions of two or more variable.  We will discuss double and triple integrals and their use in computing areas and volumes.  Path integrals will be discussed along with applications such as work.  We will conclude with the classic theorems of Green and Stokes that relate these latter two concepts.

Chapters Covered

We will be covering chapters 1 through 8.   Here is the tentative schedule for the semester.

Grading

Homework Assignments 100 points
3 Exams 300 points
1 Final Exam 150 points

Homework assignments will be posted on the MCS 222 homework page.  Explain your work clearly and concisely in complete sentences when appropriate.  Each section is worth 10 points.  Homework will be collected every Friday in class. No late homework is accepted for any reason.   The lowest three homework scores will be dropped.  Staple each homework set.

Exams will take place during regular class time.  Calculators will be allowed.  Some exams may include a takehome portion.
