Description of the course:
This course is designed for prospective teachers pursuing licensure in elementary or secondary education. Understanding how to effectively use technology in the classroom to facilitate teaching and learning is essential for prospective teachers within all disciplines. In this course, we will investigate use of computer-based technology as a pedagogical tool to improve the teaching and learning process. By exploring productivity tools, educational software, web-based information, and by developing web quests and other projects, prospective teachers will be able to better promote information literacy in K-12 students. Additionally, each prospective teacher will be exposed to various theoretical frameworks that explain how students learn with computer-based technology. Furthermore, prospective teachers will also develop a professional electronic portfolio designed to showcase personal technology and educational skills, and provide a venue for reflection about what constitutes effective teaching.

Competencies:
Prospective teachers will be able to...

  • Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of concepts related to technology and student learning
  • Identify and apply technology resources to enable and empower learners with diverse backgrounds, characteristics, and abilities
  • Develop, implement, and evaluate lesson plans that include methods and strategies to maximize learning that incorporate a wide variety of materials and technology resources
  • Use a variety of media and educational technology to enrich learning opportunities
  • Plan for the management of technology resources within the context of learning activities and develop strategies to manage student learning in a technology-integrated environment
  • Use technology resources to collect and analyze data, interpret results, communicate findings to improve instructional practice and maximize student learning
  • Understand the role of continuous development in technology knowledge and skills representative of technology applications for education
  • Understand the social, ethical, legal, and human issues surrounding the use of information and technology in prekindergarten through grade 12 schools and apply that understanding in practice

Assignments:
This course will have a number of assignments, some of which will be completed outside of class and others that will be included as part of classtime activities. The course incorporates both lecture/discussion assignments and hands-on technology-based projects to deliver course material. For a complete listing of assignments, visit the Assignment section of this website.

Class Policies:

Attendance:

The expectations for this class are the same as your future school employers. As such, students are expected to attend every class, with the exception of illness and/or extenuating circumstances. Absences must be cleared with the professor. Additionally, it is the student’s responsibility to make arrangements with another member of the class to keep up-to-date on assignments. Excess absences, as determined by the professor, may result in grade deductions.

Academic Integrity:

It is assumed that all students understand the consequences of academic dishonesty at Gustavus Adolphus College. Full descriptions of the Academic Honesty Policy and the Honor Code can be found in the catalogue on the web at: http://gustavus.edu/academics/general_catalog/current/index.cfm?pr=acainfo

Students with Disabilities:

Gustavus Adolphus College is committed to ensuring the full participation of all students in its programs. If you have a documented disability (or you think you may have a disability of any nature) and, as a result, need reasonable academic accommodation to participate in class, take tests or benefit from the College’s services, then you should speak with the Disability Services Coordinator, for a confidential discussion of your needs and appropriate plans. Course requirements cannot be waived, but reasonable accommodations may be provided based on disability documentation and course outcomes. Accommodations cannot be made retroactively; therefore, to maximize your academic success at Gustavus, please contact Disability Services as early as possible. Disability Services (https://gustavus.edu/advising/disability/) is located in the Advising and Counseling Center.

Students Whose First Language is Not English:

English Language Learners (ELL) and Multilingual students is available via the College's ELL Support staff person, Andrew Grace (agrace@gustavus.edu or x7395).  He can meet with individual students for tutoring in writing, consulting about academic tasks, and helping them connect with the College’s support systems. The ELL Support person can also consult with faculty members who have ELL and multilingual students enrolled in their classes. The College’s ELL staff person can provide students with a letter to a professor that explains and supports academic accommodations (i.e. additional time on tests, additional revisions for papers). Professors make decisions based on those recommendations at their own discretion. In addition, ELL and multilingual students can seek help from peer tutors in the Writing Center.

Late Assignments:

Assignments will be automatically marked down ten percentage points for each weekday that they are handed in late, unless there are extenuating circumstances. Extenuating circumstances will be determined at the discretion of the professor, based on proper written documentation.

Email:

The professor will be readily accessible via email. It is important to note that email is another form of communication and students should present themselves in a professional manner. As such, it is expected that emails from students to the professor contain a salutation, as well as proper grammar and capitalization. It is also expected that students regularly check their Gustavus email for communication regarding EDU 241: Educational Technology.
